U.S. Services Trade with Japan: 2013–17

In 2017, U.S. cross-border exports of services to Japan totaled $45.7 billion, while imports totaled $28.8 billion. This yielded a services trade surplus of $16.9 billion. Exports increased by 2.8 percent from 2016, while imports increased by 4.4 percent. Travel services accounted for the largest share of U.S. cross-border exports of services to Japan (36.4 percent), and professional services accounted for the second-largest share (16.5 percent). Charges for the use of intellectual property accounted for the largest share of U.S. cross-border imports of services from Japan (34.7 percent), and distribution services accounted for the second-largest share (25.9 percent).
