In 2017, U.S. cross-border exports of services to China totaled $57.2 billion, while imports totaled $17.3 billion. This yielded a services trade surplus of $39.9 billion. Exports increased by 5.0 percent from 2016, while imports increased by 8.6 percent. Travel services accounted for the largest share of U.S. cross-border exports of services to China (61.7 percent), and charges for the use of intellectual property accounted for the second-largest share (11.4 percent). Travel services also accounted for the largest share of U.S. cross-border imports of services from China (31.6 percent), and professional services also accounted for the second-largest share (25.5 percent).
