U.S. Services Trade with Japan: 2014–18

In 2018, U.S. cross-border exports of services to Japan totaled $43.8 billion, while imports totaled $30.4 billion, yielding a services trade surplus of $13.4 billion. Exports decreased by 1.8 percent from 2017, while imports increased by 4.8 percent. Travel services accounted for the largest share of U.S. cross-border exports of services to Japan (36.2 percent), and professional services accounted for the second-largest share (18.6 percent). Charges for the use of intellectual property accounted for the largest share of U.S. cross-border imports of services from Japan (35.1 percent), and distribution services accounted for the second-largest share (25.5 percent).
