Why am I not able to query exports at the 8-digit level?
Unlike with import statistics, 8-digit product code classification for export statistics are not an official classification. The Schedule B for export statistics provides for ten-digit statistical reporting numbers (which are not harmonized with 10-digit statistical reporting numbers for imports), but not for 8-digit codes. Imports and exports are statistical reporting numbers are the same at the 6-digit subheading level.
Import statistics can be queries at the 8-digit level of specificity. In fact, the 8-digit level for imports, also called the “tariff line”, is the product classification level at which Congress has set import duty rates. Tariff lines are not part of the Schedule B design for export statistics.
