Report Description/Introductory Text: The U.S. foundry products industry experienced a highly competitive and changing marketplace during 1999-2003. During this period, virtually all performance indicators for the metal castings industry, including production, shipments, employment, and net sales, trended downward. While the U.S. economic downturn in 2001 negatively affected demand for many cast products, the foundry products industry also faced pressures from materials substitutions. Additionally, many high-volume, commodity-type castings were increasingly sourced from foreign suppliers. This investigation provides an overview of the global foundry industry, including principal metals and casting methods, production steps, technology, and factors of competition affecting the U.S. foundry industry’s performance and competitiveness. A profile of the U.S. foundry industry, including in-depth discussion of key iron- , steel- , aluminum- , and copper- based foundry segments, examines business trends and practices, financial performance, factors of production, and policies that affect domestic metal casters.
